The Plantsman
Martin’s career in horticulture has spanned over twenty years, experiencing projects in Australia and New Zealand before returning home to the stunning Lake District. As former head gardener of Lowther Castle, working alongside internationally renowned Landscape Designer, Dan Pearson, Martin was responsible for delivering several new gardens as part of Lowther’s Garden masterplan over a ten-year period.
As a well experienced, creative, and dynamic professional horticulturist with a wide range of skills, Martin has a passion for horticulture and a love of influencing others with inspired garden design and plant choices, whilst understanding the importance of capturing and elevating the sense of place within a garden.
Martin considers himself a gardener and plantsman at heart with a passion for garden design, which he has recently studied at the Yorkshire School of Garden Design, founded and led by award winning garden designer, Alistair Baldwin. Martin graduated with distinction, his garden designs are inspired by naturalistic planting combinations and plant communities, as well as sustainable horticultural practises.
Additional services include collaborative garden design, planting design with detailed soft landscaping maintenance plans, project management and horticultural consultancy service. We strive to ensure your garden project thrives and flourishes.
We’re passionate about all aspects of horticulture and strive to improve horticultural industry standards and workmanship, ensuring our gardens have longevity and a positive impact to wellbeing and the environment.
Rightfully respect our working environments and the people we work with, all from which we can be inspired and informed by to help us expand our knowledge as professional designers and horticulturists.
Our aim is to inspire others with innovative garden design, to encourage new and creative ideas through inspired design intentions and motives.

Environment & Sustainability
Martin Ogle Horticulture practices and encourages to be respectful of our natural habitats and environments.
During the early stages of our design process, we carry out a thorough analysis of the existing flora and fauna for each individual project to identify existing plants and trees that we can re-purpose or rejuvenate.
It’s important to us that we source materials which are responsible and sustainable and are ‘of the place”. As designers we have the option of making positive choices and decisions that influence others as a result of our design intentions. We aim to ensure the materials we use are geographically sensibly sourced or recycled, and that the impact of transportation and energy are kept to a minimum.
We source our plants from local nurseries and specialist growers to ensure the best quality and varieties of plants. Its important to us that plants are grown in peat free compost and are free from pest and diseases. We use rootballed or barerooted trees and shrubs wherever possible to encourage healthy and quick establishment. All plant pots are reused/recycled after planting wherever possible.
Water is a resource as humans we can’t live without. In a changing world and climate crisis the use of water in our gardens is always under scrutiny. To ensure our planting schemes and your investment thrives we purposely have a mindset of ‘right plant, right place’ philosophy. Where possible we aim to harvest water on our projects and only use drip feed irrigation systems to help minimise the amount of water used during the plant establishment period.
Where possible, building materials are always sourced from local venders local to our projects to reduce carbon emissions. Sustainably sourced materials are used on projects that help to support ongoing UK government policies to reduce the UK’s carbon footprint. We aim to minimise our travel to and from projects and sites and make use of modern-day technologies for communications.
