Collaborative Working

My work at Langdale Chase is an ongoing project working in collaboration with Annie Guilfoyle, Patrick Clarke and Flint Garden Studio, along with the in-house garden team at Langdale. The garden design proposals for Langdale Chase Hotel were drawn up by designer in chief Annie Guilfoyle, collectively we have more than 70 years experience working in the horticulture industry, designing landscapes and gardens for private, commercial and public clients both at home and abroad.
Phase 1 of the garden landscape works at Langdale was completed in autumn 2023, Phase 2 is due to begin autumn 2025.

Design Statement

Taking influence from surrounding patterns of the natural landscape and details discovered on site, the design focusses on a series of circles or ripples as places, to arrive, pause and dwell. The ‘ripples’ throughout the garden soften each nodal point, turning the visitor around each space to take in the complete 360 degree option of views choices of where to venture next. Dividing the garden up into a series of unfolding spaces, each with its own individual character, elements of sculptural planted form link all the spaces together in a coherent network.

Pathways link the ripples in meandering form much like the sheep paths and footways around the topography of the landscape of the Lakes. They provide a gentle journey through a series of unfolding spaces, each with its own individual character. Choices of narrow and wide ‘meanders’ enhance the journey and choice for the visitor.

On a micro level, the planting will be of a complexity such that surprising seasonal accents will be discovered by stepping into each place and looking closer into the detail of the planting. At junctions between the ‘ripples’ and ‘meanders’ surprising details will be discovered to add complexity and surprise to the experience of the garden. Find out more here.
